1940s in the United States was a turning period in the American economy. During these years, the American economy started to recover from the great fall of the 1930s. As we know, the Great Depression started in the States and spread over the world. In the 1940s, businesses started to improve. New businesses developed and production increased. The Government gave support to business areas and helped to find new markets. Labor unions worked effectively, so earnings and worker wages were reasonable. The economy b
ecame stable in these years. The military got stronger and in a way, the American economy got prepared for World War II. The economy in this decade was strong enough to go through World for II and come out as a superpower. Average salary of a person in forties was $1.299, and a teacher’s salary in this decade was $1,441.

Holden has his own style of expressing himself. His language is very different from today’s language; it is the language of teenagers in the 1940s. It is American English full of slangs. This language does not sound intellectual at all. There are no sophisticated wors. On the contrary, it is a very simple language. Holden talks in a very natural tone and it is like he is directly talking to us. This makes us understand his ideas and feelings very easily. I think we would not feel the same symphaty towards him if he spoke a more formal and serious language. This language is of course not acceptable in society, but it suits Holden so well. His descriptions are so simple. He uses a great many of bad words. He has his unique pattern of words like “and all” which he adds to the end of whatever he says. If he used proper language, the message of the book would not be so clear. The book is about the teenage world. In this period of their lives, young people resist authority at school and at home. This reflects in their language, They are direct and honest in their thoughts and in the way they express themselves. Holden’s level of swearing and cursing change in the book; sometimes it gets more. This gives the reader a feeling of his anger and frustration. Throught the control of Holden’s language, Salinger created a very realistic character. That is why this book is stil so popular even though it was written more than fifty years ago.
